Equality for girls across the world is the main theme running through celebrations for International Day of the Girl 2021. This year, UNICEF highlights the necessity of digital equality, which was based on the need for access to digital technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The UN campaign focuses on equality and empowering girls and young women, to see the changes they want made and to be the solutions they need to have in the world.

UNICEF for IDG 2021 – Digital Generation. Our Generation.
Girls know their digital realities and what paths they need to create for freedom of expression, joy and to explore their unlimited potential. Working together, we can widen those pathways to make the technological world available to turn this generation of girls into a generation of technologists.
UNICEF’S theme for International Day of the Girl 2021 is Digital Generation, Our Generation. The COVID-19 pandemic provided the necessary background for the acceleration of digital technologies for learning, working, and connecting with others. However, around 2,2 million people below the age of 25 still do not have access to the internet in their homes.
Girls are more likely to be cut off. The gender gap for internet users grew significantly between 2013 and 2019. Nonetheless, the gender digital divide is about more than connectivity. Girls are less likely than boys to own and use their own devices and gain access to tech-related skills and jobs.
Girls are part of their own digital revolution.
Get involved by sharing stories of inspiring adolescent girls who are tech trailblazers and reinforce the commitments made by the Generation Equality Forum and other organisations to address the gender digital divide.

IDG 2021 in the UN – My voice, our equal future
Progress for young girls has not kept pace with their realities, and COVID-19 has only intensified many of these gaps. This year under the theme, ‘My voice, our equal future’, the UN presents the opportunity to inspire young girls to see the changes they want to be made and to see the solutions that they are leading across the world.
Empowering women and girls across the world are crucial to accelerate sustainable development worldwide. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right but has beneficial effects across all developmental areas.
